Redtail Hawk Rescue

posted Oct 25, 2010 2:40 PM by Pam DeCuypere   [ updated Oct 25, 2010 3:02 PM ]

In the last 4-weeks we have rescued 2-red tail hawks, 1 was brought to us by Officer Jeff Goss from Calhoun Co. He was released at the refuge on Saturday he did what we always strive for he took flight.  The second adult red tail had broken wing, i took him to a vet and they decided to euthanize him. That part is always hard for me. Today I took in an injured juvenile raccoon. She is going to camp over the winter at the Circle D. She was hit by a car, and some wonderful people rescued her from sure death if she would of been left on the roadside. Thank you Heather Holman and family. Heather donated some cat food for our new arrival to feast on. Will be adding pictures of the new water fowl pen that was put up this week end. Thank you Bill Shephard and John Holt that helped in that job. It is almost finished.

Sierra Club Meeting - Oct. 6, 2010

"Saving Wildlife: Enbridge Oil and the First Twelve Animals Rescued"

Kalamazoo, MI--The Circle D Wildlife Refuge and the couple who rescued the first twelve animals affected by the Enbridge oil spill near Marshall will be speaking to Sierra Club members and the general public on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 in Room 3250 at Kalamazoo Valley Community College at 7:00 pm.

Woody Haroff and his wife Lee asked for help from a number of state and federal agencies and the Circle D was the only help they got only hours after the animals were discovered coated with oil residues.  One of the chemicals on the animals coats contained in the oil was benzene.  Benzene is a known carcinogen that causes cancer and burns skin.  The animals were delivered to the refuge in metal cages with a cloth cover shutting out any light for the animals.  Many of the animals were cold and extremely dehydrated and very sick.  Staff and volunteers from Circle D cleaned the animals twice before the US Fish and Wildlife Service picked them up and before any identified agency step forward to deal with the wildlife issue from the spill.

Circle D is registered as a sanctuary and is presently building a new hospital to take care of sick wild animals.  All the staff and volunteers have been recently certified by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as first responders for wildlife.  They are also will take over the duties of cleaning up wildlife from the spill as of October 1st.

Southwest Michigan Sierra Club Group has over 1, 200 members in five counties.  Meetings are free and open to the public.

What an amazing night. We first want to thank Billy's Lounge in Grand Rapids, all of the entertainers, the artists and donors for the auction, and huge thanks to Lori and Kari for putting all of it together.

The night was a mix of local bands jamming all night long. There was a varied taste in styles and genres and though these were local acts.... they had some big talent. One of the highlights was the performance by the Daredevil Circus company who truly lit the night on fire!

In the back the silent auction was running and most all of the items sold. One item that sparked a bidding war was
our own Issac the fox who was put up for an adoption sponsorship. We look forward to having the winner out too meet their new friend in the coming weeks.

Billy's is donating all of the cover charges from last night, and with a packed house this is going to help Circle D Wildlife quite a bit. We also had a donation box, shirts for sale, and a masseuse that was there all going to benefit the refuge.

We also cannot forget to thank each and everyone of you that came out to this event. Your support goes to some very amazing animals and will help us a lot. This was a great, and exciting night for all of the staff of Circle D that were able to attend..... it warms our souls to see so many people of all backgrounds come together to support us.
