![]() Anyone who comes out and visits the Circle D Wildlife Refuge should be aware of our staff greeters who will meet you upon arrival. Their names are Tom and Gert and they are a lovely couple. Born in April 2010, Tom and Gert are our youngest staff members in Circle D history. They both are domestic turkeys are roam freely about the property. Most turkeys are bred to grow fast and are confined in small pens in order to encourage rapid growth. Under these conditions the turkeys’ weight soon becomes greater then their legs can sustain and they slow down and begin to sit around making them an easy catch. Our turkeys enjoy the exercise of free range mobility and thus are healthy and happy wandering about the refuge. Tom, Gert and Mable came from Critter Corner in Vicksburg as babies and were brought to the refuge to be holiday dinners. Their sweet demeanor and affection for people soon had Pam and Jeff wrapped around their talons and rethinking their plans. They may have a place at the table for dinner but they will never BE dinner. Thank You Tom and Gert for all that you do to make our guests feel welcome. |
